4:12PM - Dark Spots in Tinsel Town part 1

mummies 2, originally uploaded by Boju.

One thing every visitor to Hollywood needs to know is this city doesn't exist and don't even think about going to the Hollywood sign. Yes, there is a city called Hollywood in north central Los Angeles, and yes Grauman's Chinese theater is there, but that's it. The real Hollywood is scattered throughout the thirty mile radius of Los Angeles.

If your of the gothic or horror sort like I am, or you love Halloween, your going to want to visit Hollywood's essential horror landmarks. It's going to take some driving, but let me tell you what's worth the drive.

1. Dapper Cadaver - okay, sure, I'm a little biased, but we're the only horror prop shop in Hollywood that welcomes the public. We've done blood and gore for most of the crime shows and horror shows of the last six years, and where else are you going to find stacks of body parts, shelves of specimen jars, and mummies hanging on a rack? check out www.dappercadaver.com and www.bjwinslow.com fo more photos and info. Open m-f 10-6. Open saturdays during septemeber and october for Halloween.

2. The CIA - Nothing like the Central Intelligence Agency, the CIA in North Hollywood is part speak-easy, part underground venue, part freakshow museum. CIA actually stands for the California Institute of Abnormal Arts (I guess that last A is silent). See the Mummified Clown and the Feegee Mermaid! 11334 Burbank Blvd. Irregular Hours.

3. Necromance - A store that specializes in the beautiful side of the dead. Funeral memorabilia, jewelery made of dead animals, and vintage scientific charts. 7220 Melrose Ave

4. Hollywood Forever Cemetery - the most famous cemetery in LA with the most famous internees. A beautiful location.
6000 Santa Monica Blvd

5. Wacko - Occult books, bizarre toys, horror action figures, tiki statues and an outsider art gallery all under one roof. Also known as La Luz de Jesus and the Soap Factory.
4633 Hollywood Blvd

5:50PM - Bones Auction for Zacherley

The Chiller Theater in New Jersey is doing a charity auction May 2nd - 4th, 2008, and I'll be contributing 2 pieces from my collection - a skeleton used in ad campaign of Fox's Bones. Fox's Bones and World of Warcraft are in no way affiliated with this auction. These items are my personal property that has been used by their productions. Other items up for auction can be seen here. Stills from the ad showing the skeleton and the actors together can be seen in the below links

I'll also be contributing a World of Warcraft Ork Mask and the mold for making more latex Ork masks. See the finished Ork mask here .

The charity is a benefit for horror host and novelty horror music legend John Zacherley, the cool ghoul.

the cool ghoul

Zach is the last of the great original horror hosts, 90 years old and still as sharp as a stake through the heart. He fell ill around Christmas and while he's out of the hospital now, this auction is to raise the cash for his hospital bills. Along with other hosts like Vampira who passed earlier in the year, Zach helped create the campy mix of ghastly puns and ghoulish gore that is often imitated, never equaled to this day. While the honors for Vampira came mostly post-humous, this is a chance to honor a legend of the undead while he's still alive.

As well as a character actor and horror host, Zacherley produced an unrivaled assortment of novelty horror records in the 50's and 60's. Often backed by the rockabilly surf style of the Dick Clark Five, or spooky organs, Zacherley's horror limerick songs are one of the founding forces of todays Psychobilly genre Give a Listen to some selections here, and then go ahead and buy the album here. We're trying to get the dude paid after all.

Zacherley's music and television persona has been a huge influence on all of us here at Dapper Cadaver where his music can regularly be heard in our in store mix. We're thrilled and honored to be able to help him out however we can. We hope whether you love Zacherley, Bones, Warcraft, or other horror swag you'll be able to make a bid and help this delightful old ghoul out.

2:57PM - Does anyone know the film "Vampyr"

It's a foreign film from the 1930's.  I do a roundup of vamp films for a funny book called "Sundays with Vlad" (www.vladlives.com), and this movie blew me away.  It has some of the creepiest scenes in early cinema -- comparable to Murnau's Nosferatu.  I recommend.

3:00AM - New film documents history of B movie

Hi! I'm doing a documentary about the making of Teenagers From Outer Space.

I'm keeping a blog detailing the facts I uncover about Tom Graeff and his influential cult film, and the interviews I'm doing with such notables as Lloyd Kaufman, Roger Corman, Mike Nelson, and the cast of Teenagers from Outer Space. If you're interested, I also have a site for the film coming soon at http://www.tomgraeff.org/ where my research and more will be available online.

Hope some of you are interested, it's a great film and hopefully will be an informative project!
